The Snake Plant — UAE's #1 Bestselling Indoor Plant, and the Only Plant That Breathes for You at Night

The Snake Plant — known in Arabic as نبات الثعبان (Nabat al-Thuʿban) and لسان الحماة (Lisaan al-Hamaa / Mother-in-Law's Tongue) — is the single most purchased, most recommended, and most universally loved indoor plant in Dubai and the UAE. Botanically classified as Dracaena trifasciata (formerly Sansevieria trifasciata), this West African native has earned its legendary status through a combination of biological superpowers that no other houseplant can match.

It is virtually indestructible. It produces oxygen at night while you sleep. It filters toxic chemicals from your indoor air. It thrives in complete darkness, extreme drought, heavy air conditioning, and total neglect. And it does all of this while looking stunning — tall, sculptural, sword-shaped leaves with bold green-and-yellow striping that complements every interior style from minimal modern to classic Arabic.

If you own only one indoor plant in Dubai, this should be it.

NiceDream Landscape delivers fresh, healthy Snake Plants directly to your door across Dubai and the UAE.

The Night Oxygen Superpower — What Makes the Snake Plant Unique

Most plants photosynthesise during the day and effectively "sleep" at night. The Snake Plant is one of the very few plants in the world that uses CAM (Crassulacean Acid Metabolism) photosynthesis — meaning it continues converting CO2 into fresh oxygen throughout the night.

What this means for you in Dubai:

✔ Place a Snake Plant in your bedroom and it produces oxygen while you sleep — improving sleep quality
✔ In closed, air-conditioned UAE bedrooms with no window ventilation, the Snake Plant is the only plant actively refreshing the air overnight
✔ Multiple Snake Plants in a bedroom create a measurably more oxygenated sleeping environment
✔ NASA confirmed this capability — the Snake Plant was included in their Clean Air Study specifically for this trait

No other commonly available indoor plant does this. This single fact is why the Snake Plant is the world's most recommended bedroom plant.

NASA Air Purification — The Full Picture

The Snake Plant does not just produce oxygen at night. It also actively filters some of the most common indoor toxins found in UAE homes and offices:

Toxin Source in UAE Homes & Offices Snake Plant Removes?
Formaldehyde Furniture, carpets, MDF boards, kitchen cabinets, paint
Benzene Plastics, synthetic fibres, detergents, paint
Trichloroethylene Dry cleaning fluids, adhesives, lacquers
Xylene Paints, varnishes, rubber, leather products
Nitrogen oxide Vehicle emissions (enters through ventilation)

In a typical new Dubai apartment — filled with new furniture, fresh paint, new carpets, and sealed windows — these toxins are constantly present at low levels. A Snake Plant in each room measurably reduces these pollutant concentrations over time.

Plant Care Guide — Dubai & UAE

Care Factor Requirement
Sunlight Anything — from near darkness to bright indirect light. Avoids only harsh direct UAE afternoon sun
Watering Every 14-21 days in summer. Every 21-30 days in winter. Let soil dry COMPLETELY between waterings
Humidity None required. Handles Dubai AC without any supplemental humidity
Temperature 10-35°C — handles the full range of UAE indoor temperatures
Soil Well-draining cactus/succulent mix. Standard soil retains too much moisture
Feeding Balanced fertiliser once monthly during growing season (March-October). Skip in winter
Repotting Every 2-3 years. Snake Plants prefer being slightly root-bound — do not rush to repot
Cleaning Wipe each leaf with a damp cloth monthly to remove dust
Propagation Leaf cuttings in water or soil. Division of root clumps when repotting

The One Thing That Kills a Snake Plant — Overwatering

In Dubai's AC environment, soil retains moisture much longer than in naturally ventilated spaces. The #1 cause of Snake Plant death in UAE is overwatering:

Always let soil dry completely — push your finger 5cm into the soil. If there is ANY moisture, do not water
When in doubt, wait — the Snake Plant handles drought infinitely better than wet roots
Winter warning — in Dubai winter (November-February), growth slows and water needs drop dramatically. Many UAE owners overwater in winter because they follow summer schedules
Drainage holes are non-negotiable — never plant in a pot without drainage
Never leave standing water in the saucer beneath the pot

Pro tip for Dubai: In a standard air-conditioned Dubai apartment, watering once every 3 weeks year-round is a safe baseline. Adjust only if the soil dries faster (more sun, less AC) or slower (deep shade, cold room).

Where to Place Your Snake Plant in Dubai

The Snake Plant goes literally everywhere:

Bedroom — the #1 recommended placement. Night oxygen production improves sleep quality in sealed, AC-cooled UAE bedrooms

Windowless bathroom — one of the only plants that grows in a bathroom with no window and no natural light

Dark hallway / corridor — thrives where nothing else will grow

Office desk — compact varieties fit perfectly on desks. Zero maintenance during busy work weeks

Living room corner — tall Laurentii or Black Coral varieties as floor-standing statement plants

Kitchen — handles temperature changes from cooking heat to AC cooling

Children's room — sturdy, hard to damage, air purifying (place on elevated surface if young children present — mild toxicity risk)

Every single room — one Snake Plant per room is the gold standard for indoor air quality in UAE homes

The Snake Plant as a Gift — هدية نبات الثعبان

The Snake Plant is one of the UAE's most popular plant gifts because:

Impossible to kill — the recipient will succeed regardless of experience
Meaningful symbolism — represents resilience, protection, and positive energy
Universal appeal — suits every home, every style, every person
Long-lived — lives 10-25+ years with basic care. Your gift lasts decades
Affordable — premium-looking gift at accessible price points
Perfect occasions — housewarming, Eid, Ramadan, birthdays, corporate gifts, sympathy, get-well, congratulations

⚠️ Important — Pet Safety

The Snake Plant contains saponins and is mildly toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea.

Note: Some UAE plant shops incorrectly advertise the Snake Plant as "pet-safe" or "non-toxic." This is inaccurate. While the Snake Plant rarely causes serious harm, it should be placed out of reach of pets who like to chew on plants.

✔ Place on elevated shelves, desks, or plant stands away from pet access
✔ If a pet ingests a leaf, monitor for symptoms and contact a vet if vomiting persists

Common Questions

Is Sansevieria the same as Dracaena?
Yes — in 2017, molecular studies reclassified Sansevieria into the Dracaena genus. The plant previously called Sansevieria trifasciata is now officially Dracaena trifasciata. Both names are correct and widely used. The common name "Snake Plant" remains unchanged.

Does it really produce oxygen at night?
Yes — confirmed by NASA research. The Snake Plant uses CAM photosynthesis, opening its stomata at night to absorb CO2 and release oxygen. Most other plants only do this during daylight.

How many Snake Plants do I need per room?
NASA's recommendation for meaningful air purification is approximately one plant per 10 square metres. For a typical Dubai bedroom (15-20 sqm), 2 Snake Plants would be ideal. One is still beneficial.

Can it grow in a completely dark room?
It can survive in very low light for extended periods. However, for long-term health, some ambient light — even artificial office lighting — is beneficial. A hallway that receives indirect light from an adjacent room is sufficient.

How fast does it grow?
Slowly — 2-4 new leaves per growing season is typical. In brighter positions, growth is faster. This is a feature: the plant maintains its shape without becoming unruly.

Why are my Snake Plant leaves soft and mushy?
Overwatering and root rot. Stop watering immediately. Remove the plant from its pot, cut away any mushy roots, let the root system dry for 24 hours, repot in dry cactus/succulent soil, and do not water for 2 weeks.

"Racial Capitalism"
Format: Paperback
Cedric J. Robinson’s Black Marxism is first a history of Black people appearing in historical texts as far back as Herodotus (c. 484 – c. 425 BCE) in ancient Greece, and second a history of “the collisions of the Black and white ‘races’ beginning in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.” Robinson’s thesis connects the evolution of capitalism to its roots in racism (racialism) understood in broad terms to comprise the subjugation of one class/group/nation/race by another (the Irish by the English in the nineteenth century, for example). He uses the term “racial capitalism” to express this process—the necessity of opposing classes for the function of capitalism. As a result, “racialism,” he says, “would inevitably permeate the social structures emergent from capitalism.” Keynes attributed the slow change in the “standard of life of the average man” until the beginning of the eighteenth century to “the remarkable absence of important technical improvements and to the failure of capital to accumulate.” Capital is accumulated, in Marx’s view, through the accretion of “surplus labor” which is the extra time a worker “must add to the working time necessary for his own maintenance . . . in order to produce the means of subsistence for the owners of the means of production.” Robinson ties capitalism’s early exploitation of surplus labor to slave labor and the slave trade noting, “historically, slavery was a critical foundation for capitalism.” Robinson traces the forced transport of Black people from Africa (the diaspora) to Europe, as well as Central, South, and North America as a foundation of early capitalism (and slavery as its form of “primitive accumulation” of capital). In his discussions of slavery, Robinson stresses the sense of the enslaved people with respect to their captors in terms of the slaves’ resistance, hostility, and defiance of the masters—their “Black radicalism.” As Robinson’s text approaches the twentieth century and the influence of Marx, his focus narrows to the significance and character of specific Black leaders including W. E. B. Du Bois, C. L. R. James, and Richard Wright and their respective connections to Marxism’s diverse interpretations. Marxism, says Robinson, “has proven insufficiently radical to expose and root out the racialist order that contaminates its analytic and philosophic applications or to come to effective terms with the implications of its own class origins.”

Any socialist movement must centrally address racial liberation to succeed.
Format: Kindle
Robinson's masterwork powerfully demonstrates how the Black radical tradition emerged from the shared experiences of resistance to racial capitalism and colonialism. By tracing this intellectual and political lineage through figures like W.E.B. Du Bois, C.L.R. James, and Richard Wright, Robinson shows that Black liberation struggles were not simply an offshoot of European socialism, but represented their own distinctive radical tradition. A key insight is how Black resistance movements developed theoretical frameworks and modes of struggle that went beyond traditional Marxist analysis. Where European Marxism focused primarily on class conflict within industrial capitalism, Black radical thinkers recognized that racial oppression was fundamental to how capitalism developed globally through colonialism and slavery. This more comprehensive analysis helped explain why racial liberation had to be central to any meaningful socialist transformation in the United States. The book compellingly argues that Black liberation movements - from slave rebellions to civil rights to Black Power - represented some of the most significant challenges to American capitalism. These struggles exposed how racial oppression was not incidental but essential to American economic and social relations. By fighting for racial justice, these movements struck at the foundations of the capitalist order itself. Robinson's updated edition strengthens these arguments by extending the analysis into more recent decades. He examines how Black radical politics evolved in response to neoliberalism and continued racial inequalities, while maintaining connections to earlier traditions of resistance. For readers interested in both racial justice and socialist politics, this book remains invaluable for understanding how these struggles are fundamentally interconnected. It demonstrates why any socialist movement in the United States must centrally address racial liberation to succeed in transforming society.

A Classic That Requires Time
Format: Paperback
This book is for a particular type of reader. Robinson’s writing is beautiful, but not easy. The ideas are complex. It takes effort to get through. But, if you are interested in Black politics, and looking for fresh thinking, I recommend it highly. The funny thing is, the title is misleading. It is more about Europe and the formation of capitalism, and what Robinson defines as The Black Radical Tradition. Marx is critiqued but not rejected, and held uneasily at arm’s length. As Angela Davis wrote, this book needs to be read more than once. It’s like an album or a movie that is so unique and rich that you know you probably missed something on the first go-round. I expect to return to it many years to come.
