Big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii) is a perennial, tall, warm-season native grass found across the prairies of North America. It is a key component of prairie ecosystems and is valued for its wildlife benefits, soil erosion control, and forage quality. Big bluestem provides essential habitat for birds, small mammals, and pollinators, while its deep roots help improve soil health and water retention.

Benefits for Wildlife Habitat

High-protein forage for deer, bison, and small mammals.
Attracts a wide range of wildlife, including upland game birds like pheasants and quail, by providing nesting coverand food.
Pollinator-friendly, especially for bees and butterflies.
Improves soil health by adding organic matter and reducing erosion.
Year-round habitat, offering cover in winter and forage during the growing season.

Planting Guidelines

  • Planting Times:

    • Late Spring to Early Summer (May–June): Best planting time when soil temperatures reach 60–70°F for optimal germination.
    • Fall (September–October): Can be planted for fall and winter cover, but spring is ideal for growth.
  • Seeding Depth:

    • ¼ to ½ inch deep for best germination, as it needs good soil contact for successful establishment.
  • Seeding Rates:

    • Drilled: 6–8 lbs per acre for more uniform stands.
    • Broadcast: 8–10 lbs per acre, followed by light dragging or cultipacking to ensure good seed-to-soil contact.
  • Days to Maturity:

    • 90–120 days for full growth and maturity. Big bluestem typically reaches its full height in early fall and is ready for wildlife use.
  • Height at Maturity:

    • Big Bluestem grows to a height of 4–7 feet at full maturity, with a characteristic tall, upright growth habit.
  • Drought Tolerance:

    • High – Big bluestem is well-known for its drought tolerance, thanks to its deep root system that accesses moisture from deeper soil layers.
  • Saturated Soil Tolerance:

    • Low to Moderate – Prefers well-drained soils and does not tolerate waterlogged conditions for extended periods.
  • Shade Tolerance:

    • Low to Moderate – Performs best in full sun but can tolerate light shade, especially during early growth.

Fertilization Guidelines for Big Bluestem

  • Soil pH: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral soils with a pH range of 5.5–7.0.
  • Nitrogen (N): Big bluestem generally requires minimal nitrogen since it is adapted to low-nitrogen environments. Excessive nitrogen can promote weedy competition.
  • Phosphorus (P): Apply 20–40 lbs P₂O₅ per acre, based on soil test recommendations, to encourage root development and early growth.
  • Potassium (K): Apply 30–60 lbs K₂O per acre if soil potassium levels are low to support overall growth.

Fertilization Timing:

  • Apply phosphorus and potassium before planting based on soil tests.
  • Big bluestem does not require heavy fertilization, and applying too much nitrogen can harm its growth.

Herbicide Use for Big Bluestem

  • Weed Management:

    • Weed control is important during establishment, as big bluestem can be easily overshadowed by aggressive weeds, particularly during the first growing season.
  • Herbicide Options:

    • Pre-emergence herbicides: Consider Pendimethalin (Prowl) or Trifluralin (Treflan) for early-season grass and broadleaf weed control before planting.
    • Post-emergence herbicides: Use 2,4-D or Glyphosate (Roundup) selectively to manage broadleaf weeds. Use caution with glyphosate, as it may damage other plants if applied incorrectly.
    • Mowing or manual weed removal can help minimize herbicide use.

Key Considerations:

  • Herbicide resistance and timing are critical. Follow all label instructions carefully to avoid damage to big bluestem.
  • Once established, big bluestem has fewer weed problems due to its deep roots and strong growth.

Fantastic towels at a great price on subscribe and save
Package Size Name: Family, Size: 286 Count (Pack of 6)
As an oil painter, Viva are the gold standard for wiping brushes and whatever else you need a towel for while painting. I bought them for that purpose. I didn’t count on loving these paper towels for every other paper towel duty in my home. These paper towels are incredibly hardy, and perform much like a thin cloth towel. They last and last. I can rinse and reuse a towel to clean all the kitchen counters plus clean the stainless steel gas cooktop. All with one section of paper towels. I couldn’t do anything close with any other brand I’ve used. I love the select a size feature. For quick cleanups, one section is more than adequate. I’ve used one section in my swifter handle when I’m out if swifter cloths (which is always- I never buy those things), and used both sides of the towel to dust mop my wood floors. I use these to dust my home with a little spray wax, cleaned the tires on my car with no towel shredding, and scrubbed the filthy barbecue with bleach cleanser, rinsed it out, and scrubbed some more. These towels are tough yet soft, sturdy and disposable. They are soft enough to use as a napkin, and absorb like crazy. I buy mine by the case from Amazon subscribe and save every three or four months, and love saving 20% doing so.

Viva is the best and, by usage, the most economical paper towel
Package Size Name: Family, Size: 286 Count (Pack of 6)
Still basically the same Viva. I compared this version with the prior one I still had on hand. This one has a slightly woven vs felted appearance and the side against the roll is slightly rougher or textured, while the outside face is slightly smoother. The inside face looks as if it might leave lint, maybe. Half sheet size is the same and both versions absorbed one ounce of water. Both seemed equally thick, judging by the amount of see-through-ness, both dry and wet. Both seemed equally tough wet. This version clings to the roll less firmly, too. Viva is the very best AND the least expensive paper towel available based on how long it lasts. It takes weeks to go through a roll, especially if you realize a sheet can be reused to wipe up more than one small mess while you cook and you need many fewer to clean up the big messes. Use one to dry a pot and leave it by the cutting board to wipe up. If you're used to ordinary paper towels, there may be a period of adjustment, but try to take just one sheet instead of the 4 you may think you need; you can always get another. They can scrub an iron skillet or pat dry your food. They make the best handkerchief substitutes, too. One subscribe and save box lasts me about a year.

the absolute BEST paper towels
Package Size Name: Super, Size: 81 Sheets (Pack of 24)
These are the best paper towels, Ever. We now exclusively buy them and this multi pack is a good value. The paper towel sheet feels more like cloth than paper towel, they are exceptionally soft, but sturdy and hold up and can really clean a lot with even one sheet. Very absorbent and I cannot stress how soft they are. These seriously are the only paper towels that we will use anymore, and have been using for the past 5 years. Cannot recommend these enough
