Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) is a warm-season, perennial native grass valued for its wildlife habitat, erosion control, and drought resistance. It thrives in prairies, pastures, and conservation plantings, offering excellent forage for wildlife and nesting cover for birds. Its attractive blue-green summer color turns bronze-red in fall, providing year-round aesthetic and habitat benefits.

Benefits for Wildlife Habitat

Provides nesting and cover for quail, pheasants, and songbirds.
Supports pollinators and serves as a host plant for butterfly larvae.
High nutritional value for grazing wildlife and livestock.
Deep-rooted structure helps prevent soil erosion and improves soil health.

Planting Guidelines for Little Bluestem

  • Planting Times:

    • Spring (April–June) – Best time for optimal establishment.
    • Fall (November–February, frost seeding in dormant season) – Can be used in colder climates.
  • Seeding Depth:

    • ¼ to ½ inch deep – Shallow planting ensures proper germination.
  • Seeding Rates:

    • Drilled: 6–8 lbs per acre in prepared seedbeds.
    • Broadcast: 8–10 lbs per acre, followed by cultipacking for soil contact.
  • Days to Maturity:

    • 60–90 days for initial establishment, full stand within 2 years.
  • Height at Maturity:

    • Typically reaches 2–4 feet tall, with erect, clump-forming growth.
  • Drought Tolerance:

    • High – Thrives in dry, well-drained soils with minimal water needs.
  • Saturated Soil Tolerance:

    • Low – Does not tolerate standing water or prolonged wet conditions.
  • Shade Tolerance:

    • Low to Moderate – Prefers full sun but can tolerate some light shade.

Fertilization Guidelines for Little Bluestem

  • Soil pH: Prefers a range of 5.5–7.5 for best growth.
  • Nitrogen (N):
    • Minimal nitrogen required – Excess nitrogen can cause lodging and reduce stand longevity.
    • If needed, apply 20–40 lbs per acre to encourage establishment.
  • Phosphorus (P) & Potassium (K):
    • Apply 40–60 lbs P₂O₅ and 30–50 lbs K₂O per acre based on soil test recommendations.
  • Organic Matter: Grows well in low to moderate fertility soils without additional amendments.

Fertilization Timing:

  • Apply phosphorus and potassium at planting based on soil tests.
  • Avoid excess nitrogen to maintain stand strength and wildlife value.

Herbicide Use for Little Bluestem

  • Weed Management:

    • Weed control is essential in the first 1–2 years to allow little bluestem to establish.
  • Pre-emergence Herbicides:

    • Atrazine (where legally allowed) – Controls broadleaf weeds and some grasses.
    • Plateau (Imazapic) – Effective for weed control without harming little bluestem.
  • Post-emergence Herbicides:

    • Clethodim (Select Max) – Controls unwanted cool-season grasses.
    • 2,4-D (low rates, early application) – Controls broadleaf weeds but may suppress growth.

Key Considerations:

  • Mowing helps reduce weed competition during establishment.
  • Controlled burns every 3–5 years promote stand vigor and reduce weed pressure.

Easy to use
Color: Navy, Size: 10 Foot, Color: Navy, Size: 10 Foot
Easy setup and easy use, cranks open very smoothly with no trouble. The fabric is opaque (not light filtering) and sturdy with edges sewn to last. This umbrella provides ample shade and sun protection. It works great and is pretty much as expected. I do find the tilt feature a tad tricky sometimes, maybe becsuse I’ve got smaller hands idk, but other than that it’s great.

Budget Baddie...
Color: Tan, Size: 9 Foot
This is a quality/durable self driven (me) beast of an umbrella replacement...It has good color and we chose the Tan 9ft. Easy usage for its weight class all while being budget friendly... atmospheric presence of richness & sturdiness, and very easy to open and close to adjust to this unit's comforts. I haven't put this umbrella out for the season as of yet... because the snow is still present on the grounds of New England! "WE WINN"

Beautiful and works great.
Color: Navy, Size: 10 Foot, Color: Navy, Size: 10 Foot
I decided to try this because my old umbrella had seen better days and it was time to replace it. I am very pleased with the quality and the ease of assembly with this umbrella. It’s very sturdy and I like the quality of the fabric and the metal. It’s very easy to open and close and it makes my patio look great. It gives me the perfect amount of shade and the fabric thickness is perfect at keeping the harsh sunbeams from getting through. I also think the price is great for what you get. I would definitely recommend this umbrella because it’s made well and works well. It’s also very easy to clean. I just use my garden hose and spray it down and let it air dry. It also fit perfectly in the stand I already had and it works great. I am very happy I got to try this out.

Great replacement patio table umbrella.
Color: Tan, Size: 10 Foot
After a windstorm destroyed my old umbrella on our patio set, I was looking for a new one that wouldn't break the bank but also held up to the direct sun of the summer months. This umbrella did not disappoint! The material part of the umbrella top seems like it is nice and thick and the stitching is overlapped in the corners which should provide a lot of strength for the windy days. I really like the neutral colors of the fabric, as that will go well with the rest of my outdoor furniture. The medal pole portion is perfectly straight and the pivot point connection seems nice and tight. I would think that this umbrella will stand the test of time. No assembly needed, just pull it out of the box and extend the fabric.
